Flat Piercings

Flat Piercings!

A Flat Piercing, also known as a Flat-Helix Piercing, is placed on the flattest part of the upper ear. Differing from a traditional Helix Piercing, the Flat is located on the inner part of the upper cartilage, rather than the outer. Please refer to the lovely examples below.

So now you know where the Flat Piercing is, what else do you need to know? Anatomy, jewellery and healing are next in the checklist to tell you if you should get one or not!

Flat Piercing Anatomy (can’t get a classic helix? This one’s for you!)

Like all piercings, anatomy is the first thing we look at when talking about Flat Piercings.

All ears are unique and not all piercings will be appropriate for all clients. However, unlike other piercings, such as the snug or an anti-tragus, we find that the majority of people are able to get the flat. Good news!

Some anatomies are flatter than others, each one with their own curves and bumps. This means some clients can have multiple flat piercings, or bigger, more ornate pieces of jewellery, while others will suit just the one.
When considering a flat piercing, think about what goals you have for your ear. How decorative do you intend to be? Do you wear glasses, or helmets? Is this piercing suitable to your lifestyle?

Like we said before, every ear is different. The tissue itself in this area varies, from thicker, to paper-thin. Our expert piercing team will assess your anatomy and lay out what can be expected of your particular ear and what is, or isn’t, possible. If you are unsure whether you are able to have this piercing, just ask us!

Here, at Piercer Charlie’s Creations, we are open 10-6pm, 7 days a week. Appointments are preferred, though we try our best to be available for any in-store client questions and anatomy assessments!

What Jewellery can go on a Flat Piercing?

Now on to jewellery.

Often you can see Flat Piercings adorned with drops, charms, chains, as well as bigger statement pieces, but also timeless minimalism. We have piercing jewellery for all shapes and styles.

The jewellery options are diverse, but we usually lean towards what’s going to sit on your anatomy the flattest. This is going to allow for smoother healing and all around happy piercings (and clients).

We often recommend something more on the rounded side of things, rather than a longer cluster. This way, if your jewellery spins, it will always be the same shape and complement the ear well. Less of a catching hazard too. That being said, if you have a very flat anatomy, those bigger jewelleries are going to work very well for you. If these pieces are for the initial piercings, those more ornate jewelleries are going to need TLC and extra looking-after when you are cleaning them. If you are prepared for the little bit of added work to have your forever piece straight away, then what are you waiting for?

What about healing my new flat? Does it hurt to get done?

As long as your jewellery fits nicely on your Flat Piering and you mind it well, they will happily heal away, much like the classic outer-helix cartilage piercing. The initial pain of the piercing is a quick pinch. Half a second, that’s all! Quick sharpness and then you’re done.

Healing your new Flat Piercing will take approximately 9-12 months, depending on the individual and their anatomy. You can find an in-depth guide for healing, cleaning and general maintenance on our Piercing Aftercare page. Please, read it carefully (seriously, please read it).
